Every day is a learning day in the fitness industry – Robert Brown
When working in the fitness industry you need to have a lot of passion and self-motivation to succeed. The more you put into your work, the more you get out of it.
I have always had a passion for sport and personally developing myself from a physical perspective, so following a career in the fitness industry was a no brainer. After a few years of working in the industry, I leant that it was less about transforming people physically but more about changing their mental attitude towards their goals and their ability to push their bodies to reach new limits. Knowledge of the field is an important aspect but the ability to take a person-centred coaching approach and adapt to your clients’ needs is vital to be a successful Personal Trainer. It is important to recognise that no one is the same. Ask yourself, what makes you motivated to achieve your goals?
When you master how people tick and how to push them to exceed their own expectations and limits, you will be able to help them really achieve their goals and more! This is by no means an easy quality to master, but it is not impossible either. You can almost have a split personality at times, one that needs to be energetic and enthusiastic to motivate and one that has to be a bit more “persuasive” to get someone to work hard (imagine a SAS Sargent).
Personal Training and Fitness Instructing is a very rewarding job. When you see your clients achieving their own goals every day, you gain a lot of satisfaction and self-achievement from it. There is something special about having a positive impact on someone and seeing the impact it has on their lives. Not only from a physical perspective but from a psychological point of view too.
If you are willing to work hard and bring something unique to the industry, then the sport and fitness industry is perfect for you. One piece of advice I would give to anyone aspiring to become a Personal Trainer, is to make sure you can walk the walk as well as talk the talk. As you improve your own strength and fitness, you will be constantly learning and discovering new techniques that you can bring to your job. Every day is a learning day in this industry. With hard work and the right attitude, you can be successful.
