Alan Mcconnell – Earthtime Nursery Modern Apprentice

Alan Mcconnell – Earthtime Nursery Modern Apprentice

Which employer did you do/are you doing an Apprenticeship with?

Earthtime Nursery in Duffus.

What did you do when you left Secondary School?

After completing education in South Africa, I wasn’t sure which career path to take and never thought it would be working in the Early Education and Childcare Sector!

I worked in a bank after completing a Business Computing course at College and thereafter worked for a pension company. When moving to Moray I decided to stay at home to look after my daughter. A position soon became available at Earthtime where my daughter went and thought it would be something totally different and exciting to his previous job roles.

Why did you decide to do an Apprenticeship?

Earthtime offered me the chance to do a Child Practitioner Modern Apprenticeship which allowed me to gain an SVQ Level 2 and earn a wage at the same time.

What did/do you enjoy most about your Apprenticeship?

I just love my job and I find it very rewarding watching the children grow and see how they play and interact with each other at such a young age.

What advice would you give to anyone else considering an Apprenticeship?

I would highly recommend doing a Modern Apprenticeship if the opportunity arises for anyone. It’s a really good way to get into the world of work since your gaining hand-on experience. I don’t feel like I’m an ‘Apprentice’ because everyone within the workplace is treated the same.
