Describe your career pathway after leaving school

I didn't know what I wanted to do after school, I just knew I didn't want to go to university in the big cities. I was lucky enough to get an apprenticeship after leaving school, then I went on to to an HNC in Administration and IT with UHI. Since then I've been working in office roles which have all contributed to where I am today in my dream career of marketing.

Have you ever been an apprentice?

Yes, when I left school I chose a Modern Apprenticeship in Business Administration. It gave me so much confidence and really helped launch my career going forward. It's been eight years and I still look back on my time as an apprentice very fondly and credit it as such an important part of my journey.

What school subjects would be helpful for your job role?

  • An IT subject such as Admin, Business or Computing
  • Literacy (English)
  • Numeracy (Maths)
  • Art and Design or Graphic Communication is useful
  • Psychology can also be useful

What is your favourite thing about the work that you do?

It satisfies both the organised and planning part of my brain but also the creative and visual side. It's so varied and interesting.

Why did you want to work in this industry?

I enjoy working with computers and spreadsheets and found that I work well in an office environment so it was a natural next step for me after school.

Did you ever want to pursue another career?

Never say never, but for now I am happy where I am, and I know that my qualifications and experience can be used in just about any industry.

What does a typical day in your role involve?

I manage the social media accounts for Moray College UHI so most of my day involves planning, creating and scheduling content. However, I also do a lot of work on updating our website, assisting in creating posters and adverts, updating our annual Prospectus, the list goes on!

What skills are required to do your job?

  • Good IT skills
  • Organised
  • Friendly person

What is your advice to young people who are considering working in this sector?

Get yourself some work experience, whether that's paid or unpaid. It will really give you a taste for what you do and don't like to help you make informed choices at school and after school. Don't take things too seriously and don't stress yourself out, qualifications are great but there are so many ways to gain qualifications now!
