Provide a brief description of your business

With around 6,000 students, our college is a popular choice. Many study part-time and we are proud to be able to offer an extensive choice of courses on a flexible basis so that you can fit your studies around other professional and personal commitments.

Describe your career pathway after leaving school

When I left school, I trained at college to be a Medical Secretary and worked in various admin/clerical roles.

When my three children were in primary school, I trained to be a lifeguard and swimming instructor.

In 2004, I started a NC in Library and Information Studies at Moray College UHI and upon finishing the course two years later, I applied for a job in the Moray College UHI's library and have worked here ever since.

In 2012, the library became Student Services and so my job evolved rapidly during that time.

What is your favourite thing about the work that you do?

I love helping students with the many queries that they bring to Student Services and there is nothing better than hearing them say “Thank you so much for helping me”.

Why did you want to work in this industry?

I always loved reading books so working in a library always seemed like the dream job!

Did you ever want to pursue another career?

At one point, I wanted to be a Midwife.

What does a typical day in your role involve?

A typical days involves answering phone queries, answering emails, helping students face-to-face with funding, applications and IT queries, as well as dealing with book requests from Moray College UHI students and other University of the Highlands and Islands libraries, plus many other duties too numerous to mention!

What is your advice to young people who are considering working in this sector?

Working as a Student Services Assistant is one of the most interesting and fulfilling jobs that I have had. Even now, I learn something new every day and I have met some incredibly interesting people during my time working at Moray College UHI.
