Describe your career pathway after leaving school.

I left school to work as a tax assistant in an accounting firm, but it wasn't for me so worked as a lab assistant at Blood Transfusion Service. Ended up going to RGU to study chemistry and then entered the distilling industry.

What school subjects would be helpful for your job role?

Chemistry, mathematics, English, biology

What is your favourite thing about the work that you do?

Every day is different. I also get to work with lots of different people across different departments.

Why did you want to work in this industry?

It is an important industry for the local area with lots of opportunities for career progression.

Did you ever want to pursue another career?

I wanted to be a vet but wasn't clever enough.

What does a typical day in your role involve?

There is no such thing as a typical day. I have to be able to switch between projects quickly and offer technical support to production personnel, where required.

What skills are required to do your job?

Flexible approach, multi-tasking, analytical, and problem solver.

What is your advice to young people who are considering working in this sector?

There are a number of career pathways into the industry, apprenticeships, graduate schemes, and lots of different positions to choose from. Decide what area you would want to work in then plan how to get there.
