Local employers bringing construction career insight into the classroom

Two construction firms offered real industry insight at Liberty Kids Nursery and Hopeman Primary School.

Diane Kemp, Senior HR Advisor and colleagues from Springfield Properties visited Liberty Kids Nursery in Elgin. They applied the construction firm’s activities cleverly to the story ‘The Three Little Pigs’. It allowed Diane and her team to talk about the different roles/jobs there are in the process of building a house. The youngsters were then shown what Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) construction workers wore for their roles. The group was then split into three where each group had to build a house with different sized blocks. Also, they used play dough and colouring in crayons and pencils to create the three little pigs.

Also, Lacey MacDonald, Class Teacher led an exciting project based upon the Hansel and Gretel Fairy-tale, linked to the technologies learning outcomes for Craft, Design, Engineering and Graphics. The pupils had to design their own gingerbread houses on paper and on a screen and thereafter, build them using recycled materials. To apply the real world of work to the project, Hazel Fraser, Regional Commercial Manager from Breedon Group delivered an inspirational and engaging career talk on what her role involved and explained how big structures are built, the support required for them and touched upon uniform and the importance of health and safety in construction environments. Hazel demonstrated visually how structures are built using straws and connectors. Hazel also used dried tar to demonstrate how roads are built and the pupils got to see extracts from Breedon’s quarries.
