Julia Janas - Why she Believes Every Young Person Should Consider Work Experience
Julia has just completed six months of work experience with DYW Moray and is reflecting on her time with us.
Before joining DYW Moray, I hoped to gain real-world marketing experience, learn by doing, and grow both personally and professionally. I am happy to say that this placement gave me all of that and more.
Over the past six months, I have had the chance to really understand how marketing works in a professional setting. One of the biggest challenges I faced was my computer and admin skills. At the beginning, I found some tasks difficult, but the team were so supportive and helped me improve. With guidance from my work experience supervisor Aimee, I learned how to use digital tools, write professional emails, and manage tasks with much more confidence.
A highlight for me was working on the Alumni Career Stories project. It gave me the chance to be creative, improve my communication, and take real ownership of something meaningful. I also had the opportunity to support events, which I really enjoyed, especially meeting new people and working as part of a team.
What I enjoyed most was getting to know the team. They made me feel welcome from the very beginning, and I will really miss working with them.
This experience has helped me develop practical skills I will use in the future, especially in admin and communication. More importantly, it has helped me understand the value of working with people. I would definitely encourage other young people to consider work experience. It gives you a clear idea of what a job is really like, without having to commit to it long term. It has been a brilliant experience that has prepared me for whatever comes next.
