We are seeking a Graduate Apprentice Trainee Technician to join our Elgin office. This exciting role combines workplace learning with academic study, giving you the opportunity to “earn while you learn” and progress towards a career as a qualified Civil Engineer.
As part of this role, you will embark on a Civil Engineering Graduate Apprenticeship with UHI Inverness. This is a 4-year programme which blends on-the-job training with university study, leading to a BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering degree. On successful completion, you will graduate as a professional engineer with the skills and qualifications needed to progress towards Technician and ultimately Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status if desired.
During your apprenticeship, you will work closely with our team of engineers and technicians, contributing to the design and delivery of a wide range of civil engineering projects. These will include new builds, alterations to commercial and public buildings, infrastructure schemes, and drainage design.
Responsibilities
As a Graduate Apprentice Trainee Technician, your duties will include:
- Attending UHI Inverness to complete your Graduate Apprenticeship programme.
- Assisting engineers and technicians with the production of engineering drawings and models.
- Producing 2D and 3D designs using industry-standard software such as AutoCAD.
- Supporting the preparation and checking of engineering calculations.
- Helping to solve real-world engineering design problems.
- Contributing to project administration and meeting agreed deadlines.
- Maintaining accurate training and development logs as part of your professional development.
- Participating in company activities, presentations, and workshops.
You will be assigned a workplace mentor to guide you throughout your apprenticeship, ensuring you receive the support and experience required to progress.
About the Civil Engineering Graduate Apprenticeship (UHI Inverness)
The Graduate Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering is a 4-year programme delivered in partnership with UHI Inverness and Skills Development Scotland. It allows you to:
- Gain a BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering degree while working full-time.
- Learn through a mix of workplace projects, online modules, and block release teaching.
- Apply university learning directly to live projects at Fairhurst.
- Work towards professional recognition with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
This pathway ensures that, on graduation, you will have both the academic qualification and the practical experience to build a long-term career as a Civil Engineer.
Qualifications & Experience
To be considered, you should:
- Hold (or be working towards) Highers in Mathematics and a science/technical subject at grade C or above, plus National 5 English.
- Alternatively, have completed an NC, HNC or equivalent qualification in a related discipline.
- Demonstrate a strong interest in engineering and design.
- Have good numeracy, literacy, and computing skills.
- Be motivated, reliable, and eager to learn.
